William F. Cook Certified As A Civil Trial Attorney By The Supreme Court Of New Jersey

Brown & Connery is pleased to announce that William F. Cook, a partner of the firm, has been found to be qualified and certified as a Civil Trial Attorney by the Supreme Court of New Jersey.

In order to be certified, an attorney has to have the requisite number of trial days, must pass an examination, and must have the recommendations of fellow trial attorneys and judges.

It is no easy task to become certified as a Civil Trial Attorney and we congratulate Bill on this achievement.

Brown & Connery Attends New Jersey Self Insurers’ Association Conference

Brown & Connery, LLP participated as a Silver Sponsor in the New Jersey Self Insurers’ Association Conference (NJSIA) and Vendor Fair May 3-5th in Atlantic City, New Jersey at Harrah’s Resort and Casino.  NJSIA is a coalition of major NJ employers who self-insure their workers’ compensation programs.  The purpose of the conference is to keep members informed of pending legislation and developments within the workers’ compensation court system and provide educational and networking opportunities with clients, vendors, doctors and other attorneys in the field.  A great time was had by all!

Jose Calves Co-Chairs Hispanic Bar Association of New Jersey 42nd Annual Scholarship Gala & Awards Dinner

On April 1, 2023, the Hispanic Bar Association of New Jersey hosted its 42nd Annual Scholarship Gala & Awards Dinner.  Due to its generous sponsors, (including Brown & Connery), the HBA-NJ raised over $103,000, with $50,000 going directly to fund 18 scholarships for local law students and an additional $53,000 donated to the HBA-NJ’s scholarship endowment fund. One of these scholarships was awarded to Nayomi Torres-Velez, who will be joining Brown & Connery this Summer as a Law Clerk.  Speakers and honorees included: (1) Senator Robert Menendez, (2) Carlos Bollar, Esq. of Archer Law, (3) Anna Maria Tejada, Esq. of Saul Ewing, (4) Scarini Hollenbeck LLP, and (5) Bederson LLP.  Jacqueline Pena, Cristal Lambert, and Jose Calves Co-Chaired the event along with the help of many, many other members of the fundraising and scholarship committees.

Louis R. Lessig Served as Co-Chair of the 31st Annual Garden State Council – SHRM Conference

Brown & Connery, LLP is pleased to share that one of its partners, Louis R. Lessig, recently served as the co-chair of the 31st Annual Garden State Council – SHRM Conference.  The Conference was held on October 16-18, 2022 in Atlantic City, New Jersey.  As part of the Conference Mr. Lessig presented a keynote on Emerging Legislative Issues as well as a Sea Side Chat with EEOC District Director Jamie Williamson from the Philadelphia office of the EEOC.

In addition to his role as co-chair of the Conference, Mr. Lessig also currently serves as the New Jersey State Director for Garden State Council – SHRM and frequently presents on employment issues in various forums.  Founded in 1987, the Garden State Council – SHRM is a professional organization supporting the Human Resources profession and the eleven affiliate chapters of the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) based in New Jersey along with its almost 8,000 members.

Brown & Connery, LLP Serves Dinner For Families At The Ronald McDonald House

On October 5, 2022, several members of our Brown & Connery team, volunteered to serve dinner to the families staying at the Ronald McDonald House in Camden, New Jersey.  The families staying at the Ronald McDonald House come from all over the country and the world seeking medical treatment for their children.  The Ronald McDonald House provides families with the ability to stay together in a homelike setting rather than spending time shuttling from hospital room to hotels and back.  The Ronald McDonald House offers daily meals to these families served by volunteer groups.  The firm was glad to serve dinner to the wonderful children, families, and staff at the Ronald McDonald House for a second straight year.  For more information on the Ronald McDonald House and the great work they do, please visit https://www.rmhsnj.org/.

Brown & Connery, LLP is pleased to announce that our firm is participating in Diversity Lab’s Mansfield Rule certification process.  To be Mansfield Certified for 2022-2023, firms are asked to consider at least 30% historically underrepresented lawyers, including women, attorneys of color, LGBTQ+ attorneys, and attorneys with disabilities when appointing, electing, or promoting attorneys into leadership roles and equity partnerships, and engaging in client and firm governance based activities.  

“We are honored to participate in the Midsize Mansfield Rule certification process, which aligns with Brown & Connery’s commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive workforce where the contributions of people of all backgrounds are valued and integrated into the firm.”

The Mansfield Rule has become the standard by which law firms track and measure their efforts to boost diversity at leadership levels.  Brown & Connery is participating in the 2022-2023 Midsize Mansfield Rule cohort. Participating law firms are asked to share lessons learned with each other through monthly knowledge sharing forums. Law firms must also continue to meet routine check-ins, data collections, and reporting milestones throughout the certification year.

Shawn C. Huber Re-Certified as a Civil Trial Attorney by the Supreme Court of New Jersey

Brown & Connery, LLP is pleased to share that one of its partners, Shawn C. Huber, was recently re-certified by the Supreme Court of New Jersey as a Civil Trial Attorney.  Mr. Huber is one of approximately two percent of attorneys in the State who have been certified by the Supreme Court as a Civil Trial Attorney.

The Firm is also pleased to share that Mr. Huber was recently elected to serve on the Board of Trustees for Trial Attorneys of New Jersey.  Trial Attorneys of New Jersey is an organization of approximately 600 members consisting of both plaintiff & defense attorneys from the civil and criminal bars and is dedicated to promoting the interests of the public at large, the interest of the litigants involved in civil and criminal cases, and the interests of the bench and bar.
