Susan M. Leming Among Honored Guests at Admission Ceremony for New Attorneys

On December 5, 2023, an admission ceremony for new attorneys took place at the War Memorial in Trenton, New Jersey.  Brown & Connery, LLP is pleased to share that Susan M. Leming, a partner of the firm, was among the Honored Guests at the event.

Ms. Leming, as President-Elect of the Association of the Federal Bar of New Jersey, presented the Motion to Admit New Attorneys to the Bar of the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey.  Ms. Leming’s Motion was subsequently granted by the Honorable Renée Marie Bumb, Chief Judge of the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey.

Other distinguished members of the judiciary and Honored Guests at the event included the Honorable Stuart Rabner, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of New Jersey, the Honorable Evelyn Padin of the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey, the Honorable Glenn A. Grant, Administrative Director of the Administrative Office of the Courts, Timothy F. McGoughran, Esq., President of the New Jersey State Bar Association, Bindi C. Patel, Esq., Vice Chair of the New Jersey Board of Bar Examiners, G. Glennon Troublefield, Esq., Statewide Chair of the Committee on Character, and Dawn K. Miller, Esq., President of Legal Services of New Jersey.

Ms. Leming concentrates her practice in labor and employment, class actions, and complex commercial litigation, and counsels employers in the development and implementation of preventive labor and employee relations programs.  In addition to her position as President-Elect of the Association of the Federal Bar of New Jersey, Ms. Leming is a frequent speaker on federal practice in the District of New Jersey as well as commercial and employment litigation.

Eric E. Fingerman Served as a Panelist for the National Business Institute on Worker’s Compensation Matters

Eric E. Fingerman, a partner of the firm, recently served as a panelist for the National Business Institute, discussing New Jersey Workers’ Compensation Fundamentals.  The seminar addressed Workers Compensation Medicare Set-Aside arrangements, assessing the injuries, settlement methods and mediation practices, and preparing for and presenting cases in the Division of Workers Compensation.

Mr. Fingerman concentrates his practice in workers’ compensation defense.  He represents employers, insurance carriers, third party administrators, and municipal entities in both the Division of Workers’ Compensation and the Superior Court of New Jersey, Appellate Division.

Kayla L. Louis, Esquire Keynote Speaker At Camden County Bar Association Seminar

Kayla L. Louis, Esquire recently was the keynote speaker for a seminar for the Camden County Bar Association entitled “Introduction to Expert Discovery in Employment Litigation.”  This seminar covered critical developments in this complex area and addressed various important practice considerations for attorneys in this field.  Kayla discussed these practice issues relating to experts for economic damages, employability, mental health, emotional distress, disparate impact analysis, statistical analysis, and whistleblowing.  Kayla’s presentation was part of the CCBA’s “All-Day CLE” program.  Kayla is part of Brown & Connery’s Labor and Employment Group and she has litigated employment cases in state and federal courts.  Kayla also provides regular counseling and training for Brown & Connery’s public and private entity clients.  She has also conducted many internal investigations and represented B&C’s clients before the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and the New Jersey Division of Civil Rights.

Jose A. Jimenez Admitted to the New Jersey Bar

Brown & Connery congratulates Jose A. Jimenez on his admission to the New Jersey Bar.  Mr. Jimenez was sworn in on November 27, 2023 by the Honorable Christine P. O’Hearn, a former partner of the firm and current United States District Judge for the District of New Jersey.

Mr. Jimenez will work out of the firm’s Westmont office.  He will concentrate his practice in labor and employment and complex civil litigation.

Mr. Jimenez earned his Juris Doctor degree from Rutgers University School of Law.  He is a member of the Hispanic National Bar Association and the Hispanic Bar Association of New Jersey.

Honorable John E. Wallace, Jr. Receives Lifetime Achievement Award from TANJ

The Trial Attorneys of New Jersey (“TANJ”) has presented its Daniel L. Golden Lifetime Achievement Award to John E. Wallace, Jr., Retired New Jersey Supreme Court Justice and Counsel to the firm.  Justice Wallace was honored at the organization’s 55th Annual Trial Bar Awards Reception on October 5, 2023 at the Pleasantdale Chateau in West Orange, New Jersey.

TANJ, whose membership includes both plaintiff and defense attorneys from the civil and criminal bars, works to promote the interests of the public at large, litigants involved in civil and criminal cases, and the bench and bar.  Its Lifetime Achievement Award celebrates individuals who, by their dedication to the profession, have particularly enhanced the reputation of attorneys and the practice of law through their dedication and exemplary service.

Justice Wallace’s career as a jurist spanned over twenty-five years.  Appointed to the Superior Court of New Jersey in 1984, he was elevated to the Appellate Division in 1992 and nominated and confirmed to the Supreme Court in 2003.  While in the Superior Court, Justice Wallace served in the Criminal and Civil Divisions, as well as the Family Part in Gloucester County.  He has served on the New Jersey Supreme Court Task Force for Minority Concerns, the New Jersey Ethics Commission, the Judiciary Advisory Committee on Americans with Disabilities Act, the Supreme Court Special Committee on Matrimonial Litigation, the Appellate Division Rules Committee and he was the Chair of the Supreme Court Ad Hoc Committee on Admissions, Chair of the Advisory Board for the Assistance Fund for New Jersey Court Families (Fund Advisory Board), and Vice Chair of the Supreme Court Ad Hoc Committee on the Uniform Bar Examination.  As Counsel to the firm, Justice Wallace concentrates his practice in mediation, arbitration, and complex litigation.

José A. Calves and Arlette Leyba Speak at Event Hosted by the Hispanic Bar Association of New Jersey

On October 5, 2023, the United Latinos Association of Rowan University and the Hispanic Bar Association of New Jersey (“HBA-NJ”) hosted a panel in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month.  Included on the panel were José A. Calves and Arlette Leyba, both associates of the firm, who shared their experiences as Hispanics in the legal profession and offered advice and guidance to the students in attendance.

The HBA-NJ is a statewide organization, which represents the interests of attorneys, judges, law professors, and law students who share a common interest in resolving the issues affecting Hispanics within the legal community.  The purpose of the HBA-NJ is to serve the public interest by cultivating the art and science of jurisprudence, by advancing the standing of the legal profession, and by preserving high standards of integrity, honor, and professional courtesy among Hispanic lawyers.

Mr. Calves concentrates his practice in labor and employment and complex civil litigation.  He presently serves as the Vice President of the Southern Region for the HBA-NJ.

Ms. Leyba concentrates her practice in labor and employment, complex civil litigation, and financial services and banking.  She presently serves as the Law School Liaison Co-Chair for the Hispanic National Bar Association

The AFBNJ is the preeminent Bar Association for federal court practitioners in the District of New Jersey.  The AFBNJ serves as a resource for the Court and provides opportunities for federal practitioners to interface with federal judges and the Court on issues of mutual interest.  Members of the AFBNJ come from private practice, government agencies, military branches, law schools, and the judiciary.

J.T. Triantos Appointed To The New Jersey Supreme Court’s District Ethics Committee

Brown & Connery is proud to share that J.T. Triantos, an associate of the firm, has been appointed by the New Jersey Supreme Court to serve a four-year term on the Court’s District Ethics Committee for Camden and Gloucester Counties (DEC IV).  The appointment is effective September 1, 2023 and runs through August 31, 2027.

The District Ethics Committee works with the New Jersey Office of Attorney Ethics to handle complaints regarding attorney ethics.  All District Ethics Committee Members must be actively practicing lawyers of high professional standing and of good moral character.  Members must be appointed by the New Jersey Supreme Court.

Mr. Triantos concentrates his practice in complex litigation, including commercial litigation, government litigation, labor and employment matters, franchise disputes, contract related disputes, insurance coverage issues, and other business related litigation.  He represents a myriad of public and private sector clients in matters throughout the State of New Jersey.
